Further Information Regarding Funding for Activities Relating to Research and Job Hunting

The Department of Classics is willing to offer graduate students funding on an “as available” basis in support of the following activities relating to research and job hunting. The list is prioritized in descending order.

1A. Presentation of a paper or poster at AIA/APA meetings (up to $ 250).@

1B. Attending AIA/APA meetings for job interviews (up to $ 250)#

2. Presentation of paper or poster at regional or other scholarly conference (up to $ 150)@

3. Participation in archaeological field work directed by member of U. at Buffalo Department of Classics (up to $ 500)*

4. Participation in archaeological field work directed by member of U. at Buffalo faculty not a member of Department of Classics (up to $ 500)*

5. Participation in other type of summer training program (e.g., American Numismatic Society, American Academy in Rome Summer Program in Archaeology) or thesis research (up to $ 500)%

6. Participation in archaeological field work directed by someone not a member of U. at Buffalo faculty (up to $ 500)*

7. Other research activities. (up to $ 250)

@ Funds can be employed for reimbursement of registration, hotel, travel, and/or materials/slides/printing expenses. If used for air travel, ticket must be purchased through department and unused portion, including boarding passes for all legs of the trip, submitted for reimbursement. Failure to honor these obligations will result in loss of funding.

#One-time grant to be awarded either in the year in which the student defends his/her dissertation or the subsequent year. Students who hold a full-time academic appointment or equivalent are ineligible for this support. Funds can be employed for reimbursement of registration, hotel, and/or travel expenses. Applying for Funding:

Each year there will be two deadlines for submissions of applications for funding, one during the fall semester (November 1) and one during the spring semester (April 1). In order to be considered for funding student must submit a document to the Department Chair that includes the following information:
  1. Applicant's name
  2. Activity for which funding is being requested (nature, dates)
  3. Projected budget for activity
  4. Amount of funding requested from Department of Classics
  5. Other sources of funding applied for or to be applied for to help cover costs of activity in question (e.g., GSA, AIA traveling fellowship, etc) (source, application/notification date, amount)
  6. Funding previously obtained from Department of Classics for research activities (amount, date, activity)
